Egypt uncovers a secret passageway in the Great Pyramid of Giza

The Egyptian Great Pyramid of Giza, even after more than 4,500 years of existence, continues to shed unique pieces of history buried in its millennia-old mythology. A hidden corridor that is nine meters (30 feet) long has been found near the entrance to the pyramid. This new discovery could lead to additional discoveries, Egyptian antiquities officials said on Thursday.

The discovery inside the pyramid was discovered under the Scan Pyramids project. The project, which began in the year 2015, is making use of non-invasive techniques such as thermography infra-red 3D simulations, cosmic-ray imaging to look into the structure.

Tunnel within the Giza Pyramid: What signifies?

The findings could aid in understanding the structure of the pyramid and the significance of the gabled limestone structure which is located in front of the corridor, an article that was published within the Journal Nature stated on Thursday.

Tunnel within the Giza pyramid: why was it built?

The not-finished corridor was constructed in order to distribute the weight of the pyramid around an entrance to the pyramid or another still undiscovered area or chamber According to Mostafa Waziri, the head of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities.

"We will keep scanning and will see what we are able to accomplish... for us to determine what we could discover underneath it or at the final point of this hallway," he told reporters following a press conference the middle of the pyramid.

The Great Pyramid was constructed as an enormous tomb in the year 2560 BC under the reign of Pharaoh Khufu. In the years prior to 1889, when the it was discovered that the Eiffel Tower Paris was not constructed it was the highest human-made structure ever built.

Scientists have detected the corridor with electromagnetic radiography using cosmic rays. They then took the picture by feeding it a 6-millimeter-thick Endoscope from Japan through tiny joints within the stones of the pyramid.

In 2017 Scan Pyramids researchers announced the discovery of a gap at minimum 30 meters in the Great Pyramid, the first major inner structure to be discovered in the last century.
