Coffee Side Effects and Uses

Coffee is a popular beverage made from the roasted beans and canephors of Coffee fruit (Coffea arabica, Coffea anaphora). It contains caffeine and chlorogenic acids. Coffee stimulates the central nervous system (CNS), heart and muscles. The body's ability to regulate blood sugar and metabolism may be affected by the presence of chlorogenic acid. People drink coffee primarily for their mental alertness. Although coffee is used to treat diabetes, heart disease and dementia, there is not enough scientific evidence to support these claims.

:>Uses & Effectiveness:>

* Most Likely Effective for

Mental alertness. Caffeinated coffee throughout the day appears to improve alertness and thinking skills. Caffeine may also increase alertness in people who are sleep deprived. Caffeinated coffee, even one cup, can help reduce fatigue and improve alertness.

* Possibly Effective For

Diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is less common in people who consume more coffee. Each cup of coffee consumed lowers the risk. Coffee drinkers with type 2 diabetes may have a lower chance of dying.

Heart failure. People who don't have heart disease may be at lower risk of developing heart failure if they drink caffeinated coffee.

Any cause of death can lead to death. A slightly lower chance of death from any cause, or heart disease, is associated with drinking coffee daily. It is not clear if coffee drinking is associated with a lower chance of dying from cancer.

Parkinson disease. Caffeinated coffee appears to lower the risk of Parkinson disease. For males, the risk is lower for each cup of caffeinated coffee compared to females. People who smoke cigarettes don't appear to have any benefit from coffee.

After surgery, impaired movement of food through the intestines. After certain gut surgeries, drinking coffee may speed up the first stool. It might also increase the ability to eat solid foods.

:>Possibly ineffective for:>

Cancer of the esophagus. The risk of developing cancer in the esophagus is not reduced by drinking coffee.

Although there are many other uses for coffee, it is not clear if this is a good idea.

->Insufficient Evidence to:>

Atherosclerosis is the hardening of the arteries. A sign that there is atherosclerosis is calcium-containing plaque buildup in the arteries. Coffee consumption does not seem to correlate with a lower level of calcium-containing plaque buildup in the arteries.

Atrial fibrillation is an irregular heartbeat. A lower risk of atrial fibrillation is not apparent when you drink more coffee.

Bladder cancer. The risk of developing bladder cancer is not reduced by drinking coffee.

Brain cancer. Early evidence suggests that people from Asia who consume more coffee are less likely to develop brain cancer. Non-Asian individuals do not appear to have this advantage.

Breast cancer. The chances of developing breast cancer in women who consume more coffee are not lower.

Heart disease. It is not known if coffee consumption lowers your risk of developing heart disease. It might reduce the chance of developing heart disease and lower your risk of dying from it.

Chronic kidney disease, also known as CKD, is a long-term condition that can lead to kidney failure. Coffee drinkers have a lower risk of developing CKD. Coffee-loving people with CKD might be at a lower risk of kidney failure and death from it.

Cognitive function (memory and thinking skills) Evidence is emerging that women over 80 may be able to think more clearly if they have a greater intake of coffee throughout their lives. Healthy adults may also benefit from coffee's ability to improve their thinking speed and memory.

Colon cancer, rectal cancer. Some evidence suggests that Japanese who consume more coffee may have a lower risk of developing rectal or colon cancer. Research in Europe and North America has not shown a connection between coffee consumption and colon or rectal cancer. People with colon or rectal cancer may have a slightly lower death rate if they drink more coffee.

Alzheimer disease and other diseases that affect thinking (dementia) are examples. The chance of developing dementia is lower for those who consume more coffee.

Depression. A person who drinks more coffee may have a lower risk of developing depression.

Endometrial cancer is a form of cancer that affects the lining of your uterus. It is not clear what coffee does to endometrial carcinoma risk. Research suggests that endometrial carcinoma is less common in women who consume more coffee. Other research has not shown a connection between coffee consumption and endometrial carcinoma.

Gallbladder disease. Gallstones are less likely to develop in those who consume coffee with at least 400mg of caffeine daily. Higher intakes of caffeine are associated with lower risk

Stomach cancer. The risk of developing stomach cancer in people who consume more coffee is not lower.

Gout. Some evidence suggests that both decaffeinated and caffeinated coffees can help prevent gout. However, caffeinated coffee appears to be more effective.

Hearing loss. A slightly lower risk of hearing loss is seen in males who consume at least one cup of caffeine daily. This effect doesn't appear to be present in women who drink coffee daily.

Hyperlipidemia is a high level of cholesterol and other fats in the blood. Research suggests that caffeinated coffee may reduce blood levels of total cholesterol, LDL (or "bad cholesterol") and blood fats called triglycerides. Other research shows that coffee consumption can increase cholesterol and triglyceride levels.

High blood pressure. High blood pressure is less likely in people who have been drinking coffee for a long time. This benefit may be lost if you smoke. The most beneficial intake is 1-3 cups per day.



Low blood pressure. Caffeinated drinks like coffee seem to raise blood pressure in seniors who feel dizzy after eating.

Kidney disease. Coffee-loving people with chronic kidney disease may have a lower risk of kidney failure.

:>Side Effects:>

Taken by mouth: Coffee is often consumed as a beverage. Coffee in moderate quantities (approximately 4 cups per day) is safe for most people. However, it is possible to become ill if you consume more than that amount of coffee each day. Due to caffeine's high content, excessive consumption could cause side effects. Side effects that can occur include irregular heartbeat and headaches. If coffee is given to the bladder (rectally), it could be dangerous. There have been cases of death from coffee enemas.

->Special Warnings and Precautions:>

* Pregnancy:

It is possible to drink moderate amounts of coffee while pregnant. Limit your daily intake to 3 cups. This gives you about 300mg of caffeine. This amount is about 300 mg of caffeine. It can be dangerous during pregnancy.

* Breast-feeding:

It is possible to drink 1-2 cups of coffee per day while breastfeeding. However, it is possible to be unsafe to drink larger quantities. Breastmilk is a product of the caffeine found in coffee. It can cause irritability in nursing infants and increase bowel movements.

* Children:

Caffeinated coffee can be safe for children if consumed in the same amounts as food and drinks.

Anxiety disorders:

Coffee may make anxiety worse.

* Heart disease

Coffee consumption on a daily basis does not seem to increase your risk of developing serious heart disease complications. People who smoke or have heart disease may be at greater risk of developing heart disease if they drink coffee every day.

* High blood pressure

Caffeinated coffee may increase blood pressure in those with high blood pressure. However, this does not seem to be the case for people who consume caffeinated coffee regularly
